2. OCA Board news

a. Great news on the Ward boundary

We are pleased to report the Ontario Land Tribunal has ruled in favour of our Ward Boundary Appeal filed in March. The City Bylaw that declared Donald St as the boundary between Overbrook and Vanier has been struck down.  The northern border of Overbrook with Vanier which dates back to 1910 has been re-established, as proposed by Overbrook Community Association in our appeal, with minimal adjustments to avoid 'running through backyards' which the Ward Boundary Review 2020 declared "confusing”. Please consult the map for details on the adjustments.  The by-law will be modified as set out in paragraphs 48-50 of the decision.

Special thanks to volunteer Steven Boyle for his insights, his encouragement and tireless attention to detail. Thanks to the Vanier Community Association for their full support of our efforts. A note of deep appreciation to all the residents who provided donations to enable OCA to undertake this appeal; to Emma Loignon-Giroux for taking our case to the pro-bono committee of Tory's LLB and for her ongoing professional management of this effort. We could not have done this without all of you.

Heather Amys OCA President

b. Next board meeting

You, along with all Overbrook residents are invited to join our next Board meeting on Thursday, September 23 at 8 p.m. on Zoom. Councillor King has been invited to discuss Overbrook priorities. Meeting coordinates and the agenda will be published on our Documents page.

c. Free transit for social assistance recipients

OCA’s Board has endorsed a letter to the City calling for free transit for Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Supports Program recipients. Social assistance recipients should not have to pay for public transit. Free Transit Ottawa and 63 other organizations in Ottawa have written a letter to the Mayor and City Council asking that social assistance recipients receive free transit passes. You can sign on to the letter to voice your support for an accessible city for all. You can read the letter and add your name here

a. Celebrate National Tree Day

Tree Canada is inviting everyone to celebrate the magic of trees on Wednesday September 22, 2021. For the many ways to participate in National Tree Day from joining a group planting trees to learning more about trees in our neighbourhood, visit the Tree Canada website at: https://treecanada.ca/engagement-research/national-tree-day/.

b. Overbrook tree canopy

Last April, Overbrook residents participated in a workshop held by Ecology Ottawa, Walkable Ottawa and Greenspace Alliance to consider neighbourhood walkability with a focus on how to protect the tree canopy. The goal of the workshop was to put together a proposed plan of action that would get a sample Overbrook street to 40% canopy as quickly as possible, and then maintain that percentage of tree canopy indefinitely.

Interested in the results? Ecology Ottawa has completed a draft report, which you can find here.

6. Call for nominations: 2021 Crime Prevention Ottawa Awards

Crime Prevention Ottawa is seeking nominations for its 2021 awards, to be presented at an online ceremony on November 8, 2021. Given the unprecedented events of the past two years with COVID-19 and worldwide support for social justice, they welcome nominations that might also highlight a person, group or program’s involvement in initiatives that have served to build a better, safer, more inclusive city.

All nominees must have been involved in reducing crime and creating a safer community for a minimum of two (2) years. See their website for more details. Please send nominations to cpo@ottawa.ca by October 7, 2021.
