6. Have you seen the beautiful new mural?
With a $40,000 grant from Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General, OCA has created the Youth Engagement for Safety (YES) Project. As part of the project, youth in the area aged 12 to 17 were able to attend a series of free workshops with JustJamaal ThePoet, Ottawa muralist Kalkidan Assefa, and filmmaker Mailyne K. Briggs this summer, which focused on fighting discrimination and preventing hate crimes through art. The mural created by muralist Kalkidan Assefa @drippin_soul and workshop participants was unveiled on Overbrook Day! Centred on an image of Anishinaabe Indigenous clean water advocate, Autumn Pelletier, it celebrates many kinds of diversity in Overbrook and Ottawa. It’s colourful and inspiring. Check it out on the south side of the Overbrook Community Centre!
