3. Gloucester Historical Society AGM and more Overbrook history

The Gloucester Historical Society (GHS) is joining with OCA to celebrate Overbrook’s centenary. Their May 1st Annual General Meeting, 2 to 4 p.m., will be held at the Overbrook Community Centre and have an Overbrook theme. Stay tuned for more information.

The GHS website offers historical details about the land and communities bordering the Ottawa River east of the Rideau River to the Cumberland Boundary and south to Osgoode Township, which at one time comprised Gloucester Township. Documents include a growing list of street names and their origins – including many in Overbrook – and a recent presentation that tells the story behind certain street names, the first of which is Donald St.

4. Overbrook 100: The Overbrook Show

Celebrating Overbrook’s centenary also means celebrating Overbrook today…

Manock Lual grew up in Overbrook from the age of 12 and is making a difference to young people here and in the wider community.  Now in his 30s, through his organization Prezdential, Manock coaches basketball and leads many other activities to inspire and help young people build skills and confidence to overcome racism and other barriers and to pursue their talents and dreams. One of his initiatives early in the pandemic was a video project, Quarantine Care, to engage youth to express self love through self care and artistic expression. The concept of Quarantine Care grew into The Overbrook Show in which, in the recently released season two, Manock and guests tell authentic stories from Ottawa neighbourhoods demonstrating the power of transformation through sports, arts, and mentorship. You can watch the 4 episodes of the second season of The Overbrook Show at the links below.

5. Affordable Housing and Homelessness Public Consultation

Affordable housing is a big issue in the provincial riding of Ottawa-Vanier. So our City Councillors and MPP put together a task force that researched solutions. The result is a private member's bill and residents are invited to a virtual public consultation before MPP Collard tables it. Register here to join Councillors King, Fleury and Tierney and MPP Collard on March 17, at 6:30pm for a virtual public consultation.

6. Ongoing City of Ottawa Consultations

Transportation Master Plan: The TMP will guide the City’s transportation decisions and networks to 2046. The Public Open House originally schedules for February 15 has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 29th at 6:30 p.m. Those who still wish to register can do so here.

Solid Waste Master Plan: This document will be a guide for how garbage, recycling, and household organics will be managed for the next 30 years.
