Statement on Violent Incident

The Ottawa Police Service Major Crime Section is investigating the murder of a 19-year-old man in the Lawson Park area of King George St.

At about 9:30 p.m., last night, on February 22, emergency services were called to the area to assist Mohamed Ali Hassan who had been stabbed. The 19-year-old was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The Ottawa Police Service states that although the investigation is ongoing, the police believe this act was targeted and that they do not believe there is any further risk to the community.

Ottawa Community Housing notes that its safety services have been dispatched and will have an increased presence over the next few days.

Queen Mary Street Public School, which is adjacent to the park, notes that the School Board has prepared a letter to parents to keep them apprised of the situation.

The Overbrook Community Association is pleased to be able to release this information as part of its participation in Ottawa’s post-incident neighbourhood protocol pilot. The Association is pleased to be working in partnership with other organizations on a “post-incident neighbourhood protocol” to address violent criminal activity.

The protocol will work to establish a clear procedure concerning how community resources can be deployed to help people affected by crime. The protocol is currently being developed in the Overbrook neighbourhood, through Crime Prevention Ottawa, in partnership, with the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre.
