(Ottawa, ON) November 6, 2015 – To mark this year’s RBC Sports Day in Canada on November 21, 2015, a national celebration of sport, the Recreation Association of the Public Service of Canada (commonly known as the RA) will contribute the RA Centre as one of the broadcast locations for the national telecast happening on CBC Sports. This event is a celebration and invitation for the community of Ottawa to try a variety of sport and fitness activities.
“We are thrilled to play an integral role in this national celebration of sport. We have a strong history of sport and of producing high performance athletes over our 75 years,” says Tosha Rhodenizer, CEO of the RA, “In fact in the past year we have had two RA Badminton members play at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, both winning silver medals, and we have also had members compete at Olympic Games. There is a collective pride of our member’s performance on the world stage.”
The RA will offer the public access to the RA Centre, the RA’s flagship facility located at 2451 Riverside Drive, during the CBC broadcast. Many areas will be offering “try-it” experiences to the public, including full day access to the LifeFIT Centre. Sports Day in Canada events will kick off with a special lunch in the RA Fieldhouse beginning at 12:30pm where we will ask some of Ottawa’s sports personalities to share their thoughts on how sport has shaped and affected their lives. Confirmed speakers include Innes Ward Councilor and Sport Commissioner Jody Mitic and professional soccer players Nicki Paterson and Mason Trafford. For more information on the activities of the day, please be sure to check out www.racentre.com/rbc-sports-day.
“Sport has had a profound effect on my life. Soccer has been a passion of mine since childhood and it has allowed me to make a career out of being a professional athlete. I’m very proud to have the opportunity to give back to Canada’s youth as a coach and speaker during Sport Day in Canada,” shares Mason Trafford, Ottawa Professional Soccer Player, Pro Futsal Training and RA Soccer Camps Coach. “Being able to help the next generation of players realize their potential in the sport is something I take very seriously. When I look back on this time, it may have a greater impact on soccer than anything I have done on the field.”
RBC Sports Day in Canada caps off a week of more than 1,100 local events and activities across Canada, such as community-wide festivals, try-it days, open houses, games, competitions, meet-and-greets, tournaments, fun runs, spectator events and pep rallies, and concludes with a special broadcast on CBC Television on November 21.
“When sport is inclusive, fair and fun, Canadians and their respective communities are able to reap the benefits associated with a positive sport experience,” said Karri Dawson, Director of True Sport Operations at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. “Good sport instills character in our kids, strengthens our communities and increases opportunities for personal excellence.”
