You’re invited to Neighbourhood Watch BBQ!

The communities of Manor Park, Vanier and Overbrook would like to invite you to a Neighbourhood Watch BBQ as part of the City of Ottawa’s Police Week on Saturday May 19 from 11am to 2pm at 290 Dupuis Street, located in the area in front of the Vanier Community Service Center. Parking is available on side streets but please check the signs on times.

This year’s Police Week focus is on Neighbourhood Watch and there will be events for children such as face painting, friendship bracelet making, and colouring activity for young children as well as bubble making. We have activities for older children and adults as well including chess and checkers. Many of our local Police auxiliary team will be present as well as photography donated by the Co-President of Manor Park, Penny Thompson. Bring along a fold up chair and get to know your neighbours!

Manor Park is eagerly looking for volunteers who are interested in being a Neighbourhood Watch Block Captain -neighbours helping neighbours. This is a very successful program – and it works! By simply getting to know your neighbours around you, you’ll be well positioned to recognize someone or something that is suspicious. Each Captain is responsible for approximately 6-10 houses.

In addition, following the theme of Neighbours Talking to Neighbours, everyone is invited to take part in a plant giveaway including novice gardeners learning for the first time how to plant successful tomatoes, or sharing of ideas and plants amongst the more experienced green thumbs of our communities! Everyone is encouraged to strike up a conversation and share your passion with your neighbours. Donate seeds or bring a plant to the BBQ with simple planting instructions for the novice gardener and share your ideas about plant companions!

We will also be having a RAFFLE for three exciting prizes to be won – “Toonie A Ticket” – with all proceeds being donated to the local food banks. Your communities look forward to seeing you and hope this will be the beginning of an annual “Neighbours Talking to Neighbours” BBQ event.
